MEET THE INSTRUCTORS

Top Ten Questions         Meet the Instructors

Drew

My love for aviation started at a very early age by
hanging out at the model airplane field with my
father. At the age of 14 I found out that they
actually had full scale gliders and began taking
lessons. I earned my private glider license when I was
16 and my commercial and instructor rating when I was
18. During college I would work as an instructor on
the weekends and for my summer jobs. In 1993 I began working with the Hollister Gliding Club as an
instructor and manager.

I currently live in Santa Cruz and have partners in a
Discus 2b glider and a Citabria airplane that I fly
for fun. Cross-country soaring/racing is my favorite
form of soaring with sailplane acrobatics a close
second. Having a job that is also my hobby has some
ups and downs but I mostly enjoy the ability to give
people a chance to experience something that I cherish so much.

Russell

Russell has been interested in flying and aerodynamics since he was 6 years old. After flying model airplanes all during his childhood, he went to M.I.T. where he received a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering in 1985.

Shortly after graduation, he moved to California to work on optimizing the wind-turbines in the windfarms near Livermore.

After spending 10 years hang-gliding, he took his first sailplane ride and was hooked. In 1995 he received his Private glider rating, followed in 1998 by his Commercial, and 1999 by his Instructor rating.

Russell has been the volunteer instructor for our Youth Soaring Program since 1998, and helps to develop course material and seminars for the HGC.
